When Perspective Matters

by Claire Vorster on November 18, 2010

‘I always give money to people on the street. I passed by this homeless guy, and he’s going, ‘Give money to the homeless. Give money to the homeless ’cause you don’t know, one day it might be you.’ And I was like, ‘Oh no.’ And I was about to give him some change, and then I was like, ‘Maybe I should hang on to this.’ Ophira Eisenberg, Comedy Central

Nothing like a change of perspective is there?  From thinking you can to deciding you can’t, from having it all to grasping at straws.  Perspective matters,

Except this week, my perspective got better.  You know how you can read or hear the same thing over and over again and it doesn’t stick, until one day it does?  I have no idea how that happens.  How you can know something and yet not know it??  Like when someone tells you they love you (and they really mean it) and yet you can’t or don’t believe them.

We say it all the time ‘I can’t believe it’.  People win money, get new jobs, make awards speeches, hear really good news, receive miracles and you will hear them say ‘I can’t believe it’.  Why don’t we believe that good things can happen to us?  Is it because we feel we don’t deserve them?

So back to my change of perspective.  I am a freelance writer, some weeks I am well paid, some weeks I am not.  I have a devotional book that is in the process of going up on iTunes, Amazon and all those other ePlaces, I have a book proposal in with Penguin Children’s division, I have prospective articles with magazines and I have probable copywriting jobs in the works.

So, here’s my question.  If I believe that I am working diligently, learning to be better, seeking and taking opportunities when they arise – why would I still feel anxious?  Especially since I am the one who keeps telling you to trust God because He loves you and has your best interests at heart!

The answer is that I know the truth but for some reason I don’t always act like it.  Like a strong swimmer afraid of water, or a race horse that won’t leave the starting gate, I have everything I need but I don’t always believe that it’s going to be enough.

So back to this change of perspective.  I was reading a Blog on writing and I had this revelation -

I don’t need to be doing more than I am doing.  I need to do what I’m meant to be doing right now and God will do what only He can do.

I know, I’m sure I’ve said that before!!  But when I read that Blog, somehow a penny dropped or something got from my head to my heart.  Maybe we have to learn something more than once, in more than one area of our life.

When it comes down to it, God is love.  He wants that love to pour into every nook and  cranny of our lives.  He does not want us to keep our misgivings and anxieties in a safe place so that we can go back to them when we want to feel orphaned, rejected or defeated.  So here’s a thought:

God is not a belief to which you give your assent. God becomes a reality whom you know intimately, meet everyday, one whose strength becomes your strength, whose love, your love. Live this life of the presence of God long enough and when someone asks you, “Do you believe there is a God?” you may find yourself answering, “No, I do not believe there is a God. I know there is a God.” Ernest Boyer, Jr.

He believes in you!

I am definitely going to share this to my friends. :-)
It’s very inspiring. You’re not alone when you said that you know the truth but you just don’t always act it. I believe that when we have the truth in us, it will ennoble us, refine our rough spots, purifies and sanctifies us and changing our character more like that of Jesus, because that truth comes from God Himself, the author and finisher of our faith.
I’m hppy to come upon your site. I’ll add you to my blogroll.
God bless!

I used to say:
“Oh yeah, sure “I believe in Jesus”…
“I know about him”….
He is the Son of God…
He died on the cross…
I was brought up with “Religion”.
If someone asked me “why did Jesus die on the cross?,
I honestly didn’t really know why..
—and I went to Church every Sunday growing up
Now,– I can say “I’m a grateful believer because I KNOW Jesus, he is in my heart, he is myLord and Saviorr, and when I am done fulfilling God’s pupose, I will live for eternity in Heaven”
