You: A one-off creation

by Claire Vorster on April 28, 2010

‘A lot of times, I’ll drive for like 10 miles with the emergency brake. That doesn’t say a lot for me, but it really doesn’t say a lot for the emergency brake’  Mitch Hedberg, Comedy Central

What’s the worst thing you have ever done to a car?  Have you ever had that awful feeling when you know you are going to have to tell someone what you have done to their car?  If you are having flashbacks at this point, here’s what I have done to a car -

Got stuck in a snowdrift driving up an impassable road so I could see the sunset.

Emptied a full tank of diesel in our car that ran on petrol, even though I really struggled to get the diesel nozzle into the petrol tank (!)

Blamed my husband for not servicing the car when it failed to run (because, you guessed, it was full of diesel).

Reversed into lots of things even when my parking sensor was crying for me to stop.

Driven while the ‘your brakes aren’t working’ sign was flashing.

Here is what I have learned.  Cars do best when they are allowed to do what they were made to do.  Cars do not do well when you treat them as if they have super powers and can do whatever you want.

God made you like that as well.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.’ Ephesians2 v10, New Living Translation

The word ‘masterpiece’ also translates from the original as ‘poem’.  God wrote all about you as a poem.  You are a one-off, an original piece of art.  Each day, each week, each year, He has plans for you.  Something only you can do.  Starting your day knowing that can make it seem a whole lot more worthwhile.

And to my longsuffering husband – Steve – I get it now :) xxx

Thanks Claire…I was blessed and enjoyed your blog.
I remember the evening when Steve and I rescued you from your sunset jaunt.
Take care.
