Your Life Is Not A Bad Movie

by Claire Vorster on June 17, 2010

‘There’s no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?’ Elaine Dickinson, Airhostess (from the movie Airplane! 1980, Paramount Pictures)

Last night on a short break from World Cup Soccer, Steve and I were watching a B movie called Meteor Storm.  You know the plot…a cloud of nasty black stones is headed for the West Coast of America.  Time is running out. Women, children and pregnant ladies are running in panic through the streets of San Francisco while Dr Michelle Young, a lone woman scientist (who is having marriage problems) tries to figure out how to save the planet.  The Golden Gate bridge is hit.  Dr Michelle Young works on despite knowing that HER SISTER WAS ON THAT BRIDGE.

Just in case you want to know how it ends.  The planet is saved. The gruff old General and the President realise that one remarkable woman, Dr Young, is the real hero.  Her marriage is saved.  Her children are found safe and well (yes of course they had disappeared).  Dogs are re-united with their owners and the Russians become our allies. Prayers are said and World Peace is assured.  All in a hour and a half.

Real life is not like that.  I have a friend who is going through the worst time at the moment.  Through no fault of her own everything is her life has been turned upside down.  She is a fantastic person – passionate, full of life, faithful and a great Mom.   But she has suffered great loss and she is trying to figure out what to do about it both for herself and for her children.  Because she is a fighter, because she has faith, because of her love, she will come through this.  She will hold on, moment by moment, day by day until she emerges from the darkness.

I know what it’s like.  I have had days, endless days, when I have had to live for the moment.  To hold on and believe that tomorrow will be better, even if it turns out to be just like today.  This is what I have come to know.

When your life is like a bad movie, you need a prayer to get you through.  This is the best one I have found:

Our Father in Heaven (I am Your child and You love me)
Holy is Your name (whatever darkness is here, You are the Light)
Your Kingdom come, Your will be done,
On Earth as it is in Heaven (let my reality be filled with Your presence and Your guidance)
Gives us today our daily bread (all that we need to sustain us through this time)
And forgive us our sins (everything that stands between You and us)
As we forgive those who sin against us (we have been wounded, we may not be able to forgive unless You help us)
Lead us not into temptation (do not let darkness consume us)
Deliver us from evil (all those plans or actions that would seek our harm)
For YOURS is the Kingdom,
The Power and the Glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen (You are the Beginning and the End, You know our every breath, You are the Most High and our lives are safe in Your hands.  So be it as You will it to be, we trust You)

I know from personal experience that He can work good from the most awful situations.  It may take time but allow Him to walk with you in your worst moments.  He will carry you through.

See you tomorrow :)
